Last year an opportunity arose to apply for a CTEP grant from the state. This is money from the gas tax set aside for transportation highway projects. We have applied for money to beautify the two properties that PWC maintains. The log schoolhouses and the triangle park at the entrance to town. When it comes through, the committee would like to see sprinklers installed at both places, new landscaping added, some leveling, rock work, a gazebo, trash cans and new signage installed.
PROJECTS AND EVENTS
Artists in the Schools: Each year PWC pays to bring one or more artists to the school, subsidized in part by the Montana Council of the Arts. In alternate years we bring in Missoula Children’s Theater which involves many community children in a play.Students benefit greatly from the experience.
Shakespeare in the Parks: PWC contracts with a Bozeman based company of actors to bring in the play each summer. Donations from local businesses fund the cost of the show. The Club provides housing and meals for the actors.
Poetry and Short Story Contest: The Club sponsors an annual short story and poetry contest for school children and Woman’s Club members. Winners in each of 5 categories are entered in state contest. State winners move on to the national contest.
Montana Reperatory Theater: The club supports performances by supplying refreshments at intermission and other duties as needed.
Log Schoolhouse: PWC was instrumental in getting the old school moved to it’s present location. The Club is responsible for the upkeep of the building and lawn area surrounding it. We are also responsible for the triangle park at entrance to Plains.
Plains Day: PWC holds a fun fundraiser at the Log Schoolhouse. Old time photos are taken and sold on the spot. This year we also had a Pickle on a Stick booth.
Parades: The Club makes an effort to have an entry in the Plains Day and the Fair Parade every year. Many years we have taken a prize.
Sanders County Fair: PWC is a part of the Fair Concessions Booths. We alternate booths with the other member clubs. The fair is by far our clubs biggest fundraiser of the year. All members are needed to staff the booth for 3 of the 4 days.
Highway Cleanup: PWC is responsible for clean-up on two two-mile stretches of Hwy200. The stretches must be cleaned twice a year, spring and fall. A large group of volunteers makes this work fun for all.
Relay for Life Team: PWC participates in the Relay with a team at the event. Fundraising for this takes place all year with the raffle basket at each meeting. A Bake Sale is also used as fundraising for relay.
Books for Babies: PWC provides a book to read with a small child as part of a kit presented to each new motherat the hospital. The club purchases these books as needed.
Scholarships: One graduating senior is awarded a $1000 scholarship to attend a college of their choice. Selection is based on community service. The Club also awards a half of the tuition to a Little Star Pre-school student.
Cookies for Teachers: As a welcome back and appreciation for the teachers, PWC members make and deliver trays of cookies to the schools in Plains and Paradise one day in September.
Trade Fair: For public relations and exposure to the community we have a booth every year in the Plains trade fair usually with a raffle or free drawing.
May Baskets: The club puts together a live plant in a decorated pot to distribute to senior citizens on May Day. Delivery persons agree to take time to visit with recipients.
Christmas Tour of Homes: Partly as a fundraiser, but mostly as a community service, six decorated homes are selected to be toured during an afternoon and evening in Dec. Club members contribute refreshments for each home and act as hostesses for the tours. Everyone is needed to help on the day of the tour.
Rummage and Bake Sale: Each spring we hold a much awaited sale at the VFW. Funds made from the sale are usually designated to a certain charity or cause.
Calling Committee: One or two members are enlisted to call and inform members that don’t have email about club meetings and happenings.
Scrapbook: Someone is in charge of retaining photos and news articles about the club and putting it into a scrapbook for the year.
Membership Party: In lieu of the normal Oct meeting PWC holds a party and invites guests that will hopefully become members. Guests are treated to a night of food, fun and history of the club.
Christmas Party: End of the year. No December meeting, just a party. The committee decides the what, where, how and when. Food, fun, gift exchange, games and prizes are usually involved.
